The Moon Shine is built for the surfer who logs hours at home and travels for surf. Most sessions land at T-Street, Salt Creek, or San Onofre on a good day — chest-high walls, secondary peaks at Trestles, the occasional shoulder-to-head morning with real push. Then a couple times a year you book a flight: Mentawais reef breaks at moderate size, mainland Mexico's Pacific points when the swell turns on, Hawaii reef at moderate size. The Moon Shine handles both registers without asking you to switch boards.
WHAT IT WANTS
Chest-to-overhead+ surf with shape — points, reefs, and shaped beach breaks. The Moon Shine paddles into a chest-high T-Street morning without bogging and still draws a clean line through head-high reef at Blacks. Travels well to Mentawais, mainland Mexico, and Hawaii reef breaks at moderate size.
SKILL LEVEL
For intermediate-to-advanced surfers who spend most sessions in the chest-to-head window. The Moon Shine stays lively from the first paddle to the last cutback — but it's not a forgiving first shortboard.
WHAT IT'S NOT
Not a knee-to-waist groveler — for soft surf, look at a fuller-foam grovel-leaning Lundquist. Not a step-up — for double-overhead heavy push with real consequence, look at a step-up shape.
BUILD DETAILS
Build overview — rocker profile, rail shapes, fin positions. Hover any zone for the per-section call-outs.

HOW IT'S DESIGNED
Single concave through the front two-thirds gives the lead foot a clean, loaded surface for paddle and glide. The bottom transitions through a flat-blend zone in the middle — softer than a pure modern HPSB, designed to keep speed alive through the dead spots in fat SoCal surf — and finishes in soft double concave through the back third for drive off the back foot through a turn. The flat-blend zone is the Moon Shine's distinct contour element; it gives glide through dead spots in fat surf without giving up the modern-HPSB drive at the back third.
WHERE IT GOES
Round-tail default holds in steeper good-wave faces — the held-in feel pairs with the high-end-of-MED tail rocker for confident drive on a real wave. Squash tail is available as a custom alt for SoCal-fun mode (release + drive balance), and swallow tail is available as a custom alt for punchy surf where you want bite off the back foot. Rails are tuned 60/40 through the mid-section and pulled hard through the last twelve inches of the tail — forgiveness rail-to-rail and clean release at speed. Thruster only, Futures boxes stock; FCS II by request at no upcharge.
THE DESIGN
A modern shortboard built for speed, response, and pressure on the rail. Specific rocker, concave, and outline tuning happen during the custom build conversation — built around your weight, your home break, and the conditions you ride most.
THE RAILS
Performance rails — soft through the front foot for forgiveness, tucked under the back foot for clean release. Rail thickness flexes by length and rider intent.
Custom builds are tuned to your dims and surfing style. Talk to Blake about specifics.

STOCK DIMENSIONS
Moon Shine ships in a curated featured set inside the 26–35 liter band — the volume range most everyday-shortboard customers actually shop within. Sizes outside the band remain available behind the "All sizes" toggle so a lighter or heavier rider isn't stranded. Public spec table shows length, width, thickness, and volume in two-decimal format with a Decimal ⇄ Fraction toggle (defaulting to decimal, snapping to the nearest 1/16" in fraction mode). Nose width, tail width, and rocker values are not rendered on the public spec table — those measurements scope to longboards and gliders only per the sitewide stock-dim display convention.
Featured sizes cover the core-liters range (26–35L) most of our customers land in. Need a size outside the band? Expand All sizes or start a custom order for a specific dim.

+ How to think about dims
Length. Longer = more rail line in the water — drives through a turn, holds through flat sections, paddles better. Shorter = quicker rail-to-rail, tighter in the pocket, gives up some drive. The Moon Shine wants to be ridden close to your height for everyday SoCal, or 1–2 inches longer if you're packing it for a surf trip to better waves.
Width. Narrower = holds a line in clean, fast waves; faster rail-to-rail. Wider = paddles better, more stable in softer surf, sits flatter on rail.
Thickness / volume. More volume = more paddle and more margin on soft days. Less volume = sensitive underfoot; rails sink cleanly; turns feel crisper. Size for the waves you actually surf, not the ones you hope to surf.
Between sizes? We usually size up in volume (not length) for softer waves, and down in volume for overhead surf with real push. A surfer who's mostly riding waist-to-chest SoCal can split the difference upward; a surfer who's mostly chasing chest-to-head should sit closer to the lower end of their volume range.

FIN SETUP
Thruster stock — first and foremost. Futures boxes. The thruster is the right lead config for an everyday driver: predictable drive off the back foot, balanced rail-to-rail feel, the most familiar setup for surfers riding shortboards day-in day-out. Quad and 5-fin are not offered on the Moon Shine — when the shape and contour are tuned around thruster drive, adding extra fin boxes muddles the identity. The Moon Shine is a thruster.
Need help picking thruster templates across Futures, FCS II, True Ames, and NVS? Read the fin guide, then start a conversation — we are happy to talk through what is going to match your riding before you lock the build.
Recommended Fins
A modern shortboard wants fins that balance drive and release. Mid-rake (neutral) is the everyday default — runs across most clean shoulder-to-overhead conditions. Lean rake for heavier drawn-out turns; lean pivot for tight, top-to-bottom shortboard surfing.

Performer
Medium· PC Carbon + AirCoreAll-Around / Mid-Rake
FCS's most versatile template. Moderate rake and balanced foil keep modern shortboards responsive rail-to-rail. The default if you're running FCS boxes.
Shop FCS II →
Carver
Medium· Performance CoreDrive / Rake-Leaning
More rake + larger area than the Performer. Holds drawn-out lines through head-high+ surf and rewards committed rail-to-rail carves. Reach for the Carver when the Performer feels too loose.
Shop FCS II →
Reactor
Medium· Performance CorePivot / Top-to-Bottom
Upright template with shorter base — releases off the top vertically. The pick when you want tight, snappy shortboard surfing in punchy beach break.
Shop FCS II →
F6 Honeycomb
Medium· HoneycombAll-Around / Mid-Rake
A balanced mid-rake all-rounder — drive plus pivot release in one set. The everyday Futures pick if you want one set that covers most clean to punchy conditions.
Shop Futures →
F8 Legacy Series
· HoneycombDrive / Rake-Leaning
Larger area + more rake than the F6. Sustained drive through long-line carves; the right Futures pick when you want hold over loose-tail release.
Shop Futures →
P6 Alpha
· AlphaPivot / Top-to-Bottom
Futures's P-series is their dedicated pivot template — upright leading edge, shorter base, vertical release. Pairs with shortboards built for punchy contest-style surfing.

Channel Islands Tri Medium
Medium· HexcoreAll-Around / Mid-Rake
True Ames's CI-collab thruster — hand-foiled fiberglass hexcore tuned for the modern shortboard. Balanced rake plus clean foil response on Futures-compatible boxes.

Channel Islands Tri Large
Large· HexcoreDrive / Rake-Leaning
Same CI-collab template scaled up. Larger area + more drive — the True Ames pick for shoulder-to-overhead surf where the Medium feels overwhelmed.

JL Thruster
Medium· Apex Glass-OnAll-Around / Mid-Rake
NVS's Apex-construction thruster — hand-foiled fiberglass with medium rake and a refined foil that generates speed without sacrificing pivot.
Shop NVS →
C-Drive Thruster Medium
Medium· ApexDrive / Rake-Leaning
NVS C-Drive cluster — drive-focused fiberglass hand-foil. Holds clean lines through committed turns; the NVS pick when JL feels too neutral and you want more drive off the bottom.

On a high-performance shortboard, the spectrum reads: rake = drive priority through long-line carves; pivot = release off the top in steep pockets. Mid-rake (neutral) covers most everyday HPSB conditions.
WHAT TO PICK
Mid-rake (neutral) is the safest first pick on a high-performance shortboard — drive plus pivot release covers most clean shoulder-to-overhead conditions. Lean toward rake for heavier, drawn-out turns when the surf has push and shape; lean toward pivot for tight, top-to-bottom shortboard surfing in punchy beach break. Per-fin picks for this model are coming — message Blake for current recommendations across FCS, Futures, True Ames, and NVS.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What kind of waves does the Moon Shine work best in?
Chest-to-overhead surf with shape — points, reefs, and shaped beach breaks. Most Moon Shines get ridden at SoCal home breaks like T-Street, Salt Creek, San Onofre on a good day, and secondary peaks at Trestles. Customers also pack them for surf trips to Mentawais, mainland Mexico, and Hawaii reef breaks at moderate size. The Moon Shine is not a grovel and not a step-up — it is built for the everyday-into-good-wave window where most working surfers actually spend their time.
Why a round tail by default?
The round tail holds in steeper good-wave faces — the held-in feel gives confident drive on a real wave. It pairs well with the Moon Shine's high-end-of-MED tail rocker for committed turns when the surf has push. If you want more release for SoCal-fun mode, the squash tail is available as a custom alt at no upcharge. If you want bite off the back foot in punchy surf, the swallow tail is available for a $15 upcharge. Each tail variant is dialed for its own geometry — the squash, round, and swallow aren't trimmed off the same blank.
Can I order the Moon Shine as a quad or 5-fin?
Not stock. The Moon Shine is built around thruster-priority drive and release; adding extra fin boxes muddles the identity. We keep our line predominantly thruster or predominantly quad per board (rather than 5-fin-default everywhere) so each Lundquist tells you what it was designed for. If you want a quad-default Lundquist, look at the 2nd to None.
How does the bottom contour read?
Single concave through the front two-thirds gives the lead foot a clean, loaded surface — paddle and glide. The bottom transitions through a flat-blend zone in the middle (softer than a pure modern HPSB; designed to keep speed alive through dead spots in fat SoCal surf) and finishes in soft double concave through the back third for drive off the back foot through a turn. The flat-blend zone is the Moon Shine's distinct contour element — most modern HPSBs go straight from single to double without the flat zone in between.
How long does a custom Moon Shine take to build?
Standard timeline by finish tier: 4–6 weeks on a clear-sanded build, 8–10 weeks on gloss-and-polish, 6–8 weeks on tint-sanded. We lock your slot with a 25% deposit when you start the order. Blake calls when the board is in glassing for a final wax-and-polish touch-base.
Should I size up or down from my regular shortboard?
The Moon Shine wants to be ridden close to your normal shortboard length for everyday SoCal, or 1–2 inches longer if you are packing it for a surf trip to better waves. We usually size up in volume (not length) for softer waves, and down in volume for overhead surf with real push. A surfer who is mostly riding waist-to-chest SoCal can split the difference upward; a surfer who is mostly chasing chest-to-head should sit closer to the lower end of their volume range.
What if my dimensions don't fit the featured stock sizes?
Featured sizes are a curated set inside the 26–35 liter band — the volume range most everyday-shortboard customers shop within. The "All sizes" toggle on the spec table reveals the full 22-row catalog (4'9"–6'6"). If your dims don't fit any stock size, the Moon Shine is built to order so we can spec a custom L × W × T to your weight, stance, and the waves you're actually riding. Start the custom order and we'll go from there.
What's the warranty on a Lundquist Moon Shine?
Every Lundquist board is built to order with quality materials and finished by hand. We stand by the build — if something is off when you receive the board, contact us immediately and we'll make it right. Standard surfboard wear (dings, rail compression, foot bruises) is not covered, but is part of riding the board.
