The Boomerang is a snappy modern twin built for quick redirects in the waist-to-overhead window — the wave size where most California surfers spend most of their year.

WHAT IT WANTS

Clean waist-to-head surf with shape — beach break, point, or reef with some push. Twin fins want a face to drive off; dead-flat mush won't bring the shape alive. Punches above its weight at Lowers, Salt Creek, and the smaller-day Mentawais.

Intermediates and advanced surfers wanting twin-fin speed with the drive of a trailer fin.

WHAT IT'S NOT

Not a flat-day groveler — for knee-high mush, a wider and flatter shape will paddle and plane better. Not a hollow-reef board either; when the surf gets big and heavy, a dedicated shortboard or step-up will give you more control.

THE DESIGN

Single concave through the front of the bottom loads the lead foot — a clean, loaded surface, stability without drag. The single flows into a double concave through the mid-tail that drives water behind the fins for speed. A vee panel out the very back foot lets the board release on demand and skate rather than lock into a long held arc. Low entry rocker keeps paddle and glide alive on softer mornings; high exit rocker keeps the back foot lively when you commit to a turn rather than just trim.

THE RAILS

60/40 rails through the midsection give a forgiving rail-to-rail feel — they soften a slightly mistimed weight shift without washing out. Hard rails through the last 12" of the tail release water cleanly off the back foot, which is what lets the board feel lively off the top rather than dragging through the back end of a turn.

+ How to think about dims

Length. Longer = more rail line in the water (drives through a turn, holds through flat sections, paddles better). Shorter = quicker rail-to-rail, tighter in the pocket, gives up some drive.

Width. Narrower = holds a line in clean, fast waves; faster rail-to-rail. Wider = paddles better, more stable in softer surf, sits flatter on rail.

Thickness / volume. More volume = more paddle and more margin on soft days. Less volume = sensitive underfoot; rails sink cleanly; turns feel crisper. Size for the waves you actually surf, not the ones you hope to surf.

Between sizes? We usually size up in volume (not length) for softer waves, and down in volume for overhead surf with real push.

FIN SETUP

Twin + trailer only. Futures boxes. Two main twin fins plus a small trailer — the trailer adds drive and hold without the drag of a full thruster. The shape is tuned around this exact config; we don't offer thruster or quad conversions.

Twin fins live mid-rake to rake-leaning. Drive and looseness both want side fins to hold a long arc rather than pivot tight. Lean rake for fattier point break and longer carves; sit nearer mid-rake for punchier beach break. RAKE SPECTRUM

Where each recommended fin sits between drawn-out rake (heavier arcs, more hold) and tight pivot (vertical release, modern shortboard turning). Mid-rake (neutral) is the balanced default.

On a twin fin, the spectrum reads: rake = sustained drive and trim speed in fattier waves; mid-rake = the everyday pick that still releases off the top. Pivot-leaning twins exist but are rare.

What size Boomerang should I order for my weight and home break?

Order by volume, not by length. The featured 26–35L band covers most California surfers across most California days. A 160–175 lb rider on a clean morning at Lowers or San Onofre lands around 28–31L; a heavier rider or someone surfing softer beach-break afternoons sizes up into the 32–35L window. The volume column on the spec table is the honest number to anchor on; length adjusts inside that band based on how lined-up your home break is. Between sizes? Size up in volume for softer surf, down for clean overhead push.

Why a vee panel out the tail on a modern twin?

The vee panel through the very back of the bottom releases water cleanly when you ask the board to skate. It's what lets the Boomerang come right back to the line you started on rather than holding through a long arc. Pairs with the double concave just ahead of it: the double drives water behind the fins for speed, the vee lets the back foot pivot rather than lock. Look at the contour diagram on this page — the vee sits in the tail, the double through the mid-tail, the single through the front. That layout is the "snappy + driving" identity in one line.

What fin templates should I run?

We're finalizing our per-template recommendations across Futures, FCS II, True Ames, and NVS — they'll land here when the rake-vs-pivot session ships. Starting premise: the Boomerang likes upright-leaning twin templates (think MR-style uprights) more than mid-rake drive templates. The wider tail and snappier identity want pivot-y fins, not rake. Keel fins are an interesting A/B experiment too — the wider outline can carry a keel without overdriving. Until the template matrix lands, start the custom order and we'll talk through your weight, stance, and home break before locking the fin pair.

Is the Boomerang a beginner board?

Not a true beginner board — paddle out on a soft-top or a higher-volume foamy first if you've never stood up on a wave. The Boomerang IS forgiving enough for an intermediate stepping into a twin for the first time: 60/40 rails through the midsection forgive a slightly mistimed weight shift, and the wider tail is more stable than a pulled-in pin twin under foot. But the snap and release in the back foot keep it interesting for advanced surfers, so you won't outgrow it the way you'd outgrow a pure trainer.

How does this compare to the Album Twinsman or the Christenson Bandito?

The Twinsman is the closest single anchor — modern performance twin, swallow-tail variants, pivot-biased intent. Voice on Album's page ("snap, pivot, redirect") sits very close to the Boomerang's. The Bandito is the next anchor — modern twin lineage, pivot-leaning outline. Christenson runs simpler concaves than the Boomerang's single-to-double-to-vee pattern, so the bottom-contour philosophy diverges, but the on-wave intent overlaps. The Boomerang isn't a copy of either; it's a synthesis tuned for SoCal reef, beach, and point breaks. Expect a similar wave window with a slightly more forgiving rail under foot.

What waves does the Boomerang fit, and where does it stop working?

Best on waist-to-overhead California reef, point, and beach break in clean conditions — Lowers on a clean morning, Salt Creek for the chest-high punch, Trestles when the wind cooperates. Translates cleanly to shoulder-high days on a mainland Mexico point or a chest-high afternoon at a Baja beach break. Where it stops working: underpowered knee-high mush (paddle out on a higher-volume fish-leaning shape), and double-overhead heavy reef (paddle out on a step-up). The Boomerang is a "good California day" twin, not an Indo heavy-day step-up.

How long does a Boomerang take to build, and what's the construction process?

Lead time runs 4–8 weeks from order confirmation to shop pickup or shipment, depending on season and current queue. Process: every Boomerang starts as a Shape3D file refined by Blake (Founder & Designer), CNC-cut on a foam blank (US Blanks 1.0 EPS or PU equivalent), then finished by hand in the Lundquist shop in San Clemente by Jack Sykes. Glassing schedule, resin choice, and finish tier (Starter $750 / Standard $900 / Premium $1100) all feed into the timeline — the Premium gloss-and-polish tier adds two weeks over the sanded tiers. Confirmed lead time lands on your order at checkout.

Can I demo a Boomerang before ordering?

Demo policy is by appointment at the San Clemente shop (106 W Mariposa Unit B). Whether a Boomerang demo board is in the rack at any given moment depends on what's been built, what's been ridden, and what's in the shop's current stock. Best move: message Blake before driving in, mention your weight + home break + the size band you're considering, and we'll let you know what's sitting in the rack and what's available for a paddle-out at a nearby break. Custom builds ship without a demo — the sizing call gets made through a conversation, not a test ride.
