Board Details Checklist

3 min read

Everything we need from you to begin your custom build.

This is the full list of decisions we'll walk through when you order a custom board. You don't have to have all the answers before contacting us โ€” most customers don't โ€” but seeing the full list up front helps you know what's coming and where to read up on the decisions that feel unfamiliar.

If you haven't read it yet, the [Start Here primer](/build-guide/start-here) orients you on the order these decisions get made and which ones matter most. This guide is the full checklist that follows from that.

Shape Decisions

The shape of your board is captured in two answers:

  • Model selection โ€” which Lundquist [model](/models) calls to you? Every model is a different shape already dialed in for a different wave and riding style. Pick the one that matches your conditions.
  • Board dimensions โ€” length, width, thickness. If you're not sure, we'll recommend based on your height, weight, and ability. Every model has featured stock sizes on its product page, plus a 1/16" adjuster for width and thickness if you want to fine-tune.

Structure Decisions

These two determine how your board feels and how long it lasts:

  • Foam & resin type โ€” PU/polyester (traditional, affordable), EPS/epoxy (lighter, stiffer), or PU/epoxy (our default โ€” best of both worlds). Read the [Foam & Resin Types guide](/build-guide/foam-resin-types).
  • Foam density โ€” within your chosen foam type, the color-coded density tier. We default to Brown for logs, Yellow for shortboards/twins/smaller mids, Blue for everything else. Read the [Foam Densities guide](/build-guide/foam-densities).
  • Glassing schedule โ€” which cloth weights and patches on deck, bottom, and tail. We default heavier than industry standard. Read the [Glassing Schedules guide](/build-guide/glassing-schedules).

Aesthetic Decisions

The fun part โ€” how your board looks:

  • Stringer combination โ€” 1/2" dark-wood (default on longboards), basswood, cedar, balsa, T-band multi-wood glue-up, big wedge, double stringer, or colored foam strips. Read the [Stringer Options guide](/build-guide/stringer-options).
  • Resin tint & color โ€” transparent, 50/50 opaque, or fully opaque, in any color you pick. Read the [Resin Tint Opacities guide](/build-guide/resin-tint-opacities) โ€” especially the section on how rails work, which is the most-misunderstood part of color.
  • Airspray design โ€” optional hand-painted artwork on top of the resin tint, done by Barry Snyder. Bring a reference or work with Barry on something original. Read the [Airsprays guide](/build-guide/airsprays).
  • Finish โ€” gloss + polish (shiny, heavier, premium) or sanded (matte, lighter). Read the [Finish Options guide](/build-guide/finish-options).
  • Logo placement & style โ€” where on the board you want your Lundquist logo, and which of our logo options you prefer. Default is the Black Bubble Font, 1/3 down from the nose on the deck.

Hardware Decisions

The bits at the ends:

  • Fin box quantity โ€” single, thruster (3), quad (4), 2+1 (single with sidebites), or five-fin. Each model has a default that matches the shape's design intent; you can override if you have strong preferences.
  • Fin box type โ€” Futures (our default), FCS II, or glass-ons (permanent). Read the [Fin Box Options guide](/build-guide/fin-box-options).
  • Leash attachment (longboards only) โ€” glassed leash loop on the deck near the tail, or through-box leash routed through the fin box. Read the [Through-Box Leash guide](/build-guide/through-box-leash) and [Glassed Leash Loop guide](/build-guide/glassed-leash-loop) for the difference.
  • Fin box color โ€” white (default), black, or custom-tinted to match your resin.
  • Leash plug color (on multi-fin boards that use a standard plug) โ€” match the board or contrast.
  • Deck & tail patches โ€” volan patches for classic aesthetic, colored patches, or no patch on the lightest builds.

Special Requests

Channels, wings, asymmetric shapes, signage board logos, specific surf-travel builds, or any other modification not covered above. These are always possible and priced per-request.

Timeline

Once we have your answers, we'll confirm a production timeline โ€” typically 4โ€“10 weeks from deposit to delivery depending on finish type, current queue, and any custom artwork. Gloss + polish adds time over sanded. Airspray adds time over no airspray. We'll give you a realistic date up front.
