The Popsicle Stick is the slim, playful daily-driver in the Lundquist shortboard lineup. Built for the surfer who lives inside the waist-to-shoulder window — clean San Onofre point days, T-Street on a mid-tide push, the inside reform at Trestles when Lowers itself is crowded — and wants a board that gets out of the way and lets them surf instinctively.
WHAT IT WANTS
Waist-to-overhead beach break, point, or reef with shape and push. Summer slop at San Onofre, sunrise sets at Salt Creek, clean Lowers when the south fills in. Travels well to Indo, Mexico, and Hawaii.
SKILL LEVEL
Intermediate to advanced surfers who want a wider, retro-leaning shortboard that still performs in good surf.
WHAT IT'S NOT
Not a flat-day groveler — for knee-high mush, a wider, flatter shape will plane better. Not a step-up either; when the surf gets to double-overhead with heavy push, a dedicated step-up will handle it.

Message BlakeTHE OUTLINE
The outline runs slim through the width: tighter than a contest shortboard at the same length, which trims volume without losing the planing surface you need to generate speed in mellower waves. The result is a board that feels light and direct underfoot, switches rails with almost no input, and keeps the natural shortboard arc through turns instead of feeling stubby like a groveler.
WHERE IT WORKS
Everyday surf with shape: shoulder-high peaks at Salt Creek, fun-size Blacks, a clean morning at Riviera. On trip-distance waves it'll carry through small-to-fun-size Mainland Mexico beach break or the inside sections at Saladita on a clean shoulder day. Where it doesn't belong is double-overhead, gun-territory surf — that's a step-up conversation, not a Popsicle Stick conversation.
BUILD
Designed by Blake (Founder & Designer) in Shape3D, CNC-cut from locally milled blanks, then finished in San Clemente — every Popsicle Stick is built to your specs. Stock dims run from 4'9" up through 6'6" at one-inch increments; the featured set lands inside the 26–35L band most everyday riders shop from. Thruster default; quad and 5-fin available.
THE DESIGN
A modern shortboard built for speed, response, and pressure on the rail. Specific rocker, concave, and outline tuning happen during the custom build conversation — built around your weight, your home break, and the conditions you ride most.
THE RAILS
Performance rails — soft through the front foot for forgiveness, tucked under the back foot for clean release. Rail thickness flexes by length and rider intent.
Custom builds are tuned to your dims and surfing style. Talk to Blake about specifics.
FIN SETUP
Thruster stock. Futures boxes. The thruster is the right lead config for a versatile shortboard — predictable drive off the back foot, balanced feel rail-to-rail, the most familiar setup for anyone coming from a modern shortboard. Add the 5-fin option at order time and you can run quads too on the same board.
Need help picking thruster vs quad templates? Read the fin guide, then start a conversation — Blake's happy to talk it through before you lock the build.
Recommended Fins
A modern shortboard wants fins that balance drive and release. Mid-rake (neutral) is the everyday default — runs across most clean shoulder-to-overhead conditions. Lean rake for heavier drawn-out turns; lean pivot for tight, top-to-bottom shortboard surfing.

Performer
Medium· PC Carbon + AirCoreAll-Around / Mid-Rake
FCS's most versatile template. Moderate rake and balanced foil keep modern shortboards responsive rail-to-rail. The default if you're running FCS boxes.

Carver
Medium· Performance CoreDrive / Rake-Leaning
More rake + larger area than the Performer. Holds drawn-out lines through head-high+ surf and rewards committed rail-to-rail carves. Reach for the Carver when the Performer feels too loose.

Reactor
Medium· Performance CorePivot / Top-to-Bottom
Upright template with shorter base — releases off the top vertically. The pick when you want tight, snappy shortboard surfing in punchy beach break.

F6 Honeycomb
Medium· HoneycombAll-Around / Mid-Rake
A balanced mid-rake all-rounder — drive plus pivot release in one set. The everyday Futures pick if you want one set that covers most clean to punchy conditions.

P6 Alpha
· AlphaPivot / Top-to-Bottom
Futures's P-series is their dedicated pivot template — upright leading edge, shorter base, vertical release. Pairs with shortboards built for punchy contest-style surfing.

JL Thruster
Medium· Apex Glass-OnAll-Around / Mid-Rake
NVS's Apex-construction thruster — hand-foiled fiberglass with medium rake and a refined foil that generates speed without sacrificing pivot.

Where each recommended fin sits between drawn-out rake (heavier arcs, more hold) and tight pivot (vertical release, modern shortboard turning). Mid-rake (neutral) is the balanced default.
Drawn-out arcs. Power, hold, drive through long-line turns.
Balanced — drive plus pivot release. The everyday HPSB default.
Tight, vertical release. Modern shortboard pivot off the top.

On a high-performance shortboard, the spectrum reads: rake = drive priority through long-line carves; pivot = release off the top in steep pockets. Mid-rake (neutral) covers most everyday HPSB conditions.
WHAT TO PICK
Mid-rake (neutral) is the safest first pick on a high-performance shortboard — drive plus pivot release covers most clean shoulder-to-overhead conditions. Lean toward rake for heavier, drawn-out turns when the surf has push and shape; lean toward pivot for tight, top-to-bottom shortboard surfing in punchy beach break. Per-fin picks for this model are coming — message Blake for current recommendations across FCS, Futures, True Ames, and NVS.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Sizing
Q: What size Popsicle Stick should I get for my weight and the waves I usually surf?
A: For a 165–180 lb intermediate-to-advanced surfer riding clean waist-to-shoulder SoCal beach breaks 3–4 sessions a week, the 5'11" to 6'2" range inside the 28–34L volume band is where most everyday orders land. Lighter or smaller surfers come down a size; heavier riders or anyone who wants more paddle margin steps up in volume rather than length. Size for the waves you actually surf, not the ones you hope to surf — and if you're between two sizes, message me and we'll talk through where you ride and what you're sizing against. `[BLAKE: ?]` confirm the volume band default.
Fin setup
Q: Thruster, quad, or 5-fin — which one should I order?
A: Stock setup is thruster — the standard daily-shortboard feel, even rail-to-rail engagement, what most Popsicle Stick orders go out the door with. Order quad if your home break has fast, down-the-line walls and you want the looser tail and the extra drive projecting through flat sections. Order 5-fin ($40 upcharge) if you want to swap setups within a session — you get both configurations from the same board. Default plug system is Futures. Specific template recommendations (rake / pivot / size) are coming in the next fin-recs sweep — until then, start the order and we'll recommend templates based on your weight, stance, and home break.
Wave range
Q: What's the wave range — when does the Popsicle Stick stop working?
A: Honest range is clean waist-to-shoulder with shape, with occasional clean overhead — Salt Creek, T-Street on a mid-tide push, the inside reform at Trestles, fun-size Lowers, clean San Onofre point days. On trip-distance waves it carries through small-to-fun-size mainland Mexico beach break and the inside sections at Saladita. Where it stops working: weak knee-to-waist mush (the slim outline doesn't generate enough planing area to catch soft takeoffs — look at a wider daily driver), and double-overhead surf with real push (that's a step-up conversation). The middle is where this board lives.
Skill level
Q: I'm an upper-beginner / lower-intermediate. Is the Popsicle Stick too much board for me?
A: Probably yes — the slim outline is a deliberate trade for quick rail-to-rail response, and that trade only pays off if you're already turning consistently from the rail rather than from the deck. If you're still in the foam-board → first-shortboard transition, look at a wider daily driver with more paddle catch and more forgiveness on rail. If you're already a confident intermediate who's looking for a board that gets out of the way and lets you surf instinctively, the Popsicle Stick lands cleanly inside that window. `[BLAKE: ?]` confirm skill-level positioning.
Build process + turnaround
Q: How long does a custom Popsicle Stick take to build?
A: Lead times depend on the finish tier:
- Starter (clear resin, sanded — $750): 4–6 weeks - Premium (resin tint + gloss + polish — $1,100): 6–8 weeks - Standard (resin tint, sanded — $900): 8–10 weeks (longer than Premium because the tint coat needs to set fully before sanding cleanly without breaking through.)
Every Popsicle Stick is designed by me (Blake) in Shape3D, CNC-cut from locally milled blanks, then finished here in San Clemente by Jack Sykes. Lead times reflect current queue — confirmed when you place the order. 25% deposit at order, balance on completion.
Comparable competitor framing
Q: How does the Popsicle Stick compare to a Channel Islands Sampler or an Album Insanity?
A: Closest voice match is the CI Sampler — daily-driver shortboard for less-than-perfect surf — and the Album Insanity — the playful daily HPSB with narrower outline options. Both are honest reference points. The Popsicle Stick lives in the same neighborhood: slim outline, daily driver, clean waist-to-shoulder window, modern shortboard hydrodynamics rather than retro-fish DNA. The differences come down to specific contour and rail decisions; the *positioning* is in the same family. If you've ridden either of those and liked them, you'll have a quick read on whether the Popsicle Stick fits — message me and we'll talk through the spec deltas before you lock the build.
Glassing + construction options
Q: Can I get a heavier glass schedule for high-impact surf?
A: Yes. Stock construction defaults to a 4oz S-cloth + 4oz warp deck (`4S+4W`) and a 4oz S-cloth bottom (`4S`), clear, on a PU blank with polyester resin and a standard 1/4" basswood stringer. For heavier riders or anyone surfing reef regularly, we can step the deck up to 4S+4S+4W for impact resistance — read the glassing schedules guide for the full menu. Carbon strips, parabolic stringers, and an EPS + epoxy variant are available — pricing pulls live from `custom-pricing.ts` and we'll walk you through the trade-offs at order time.
Try-before-buy
Q: Can I demo a Popsicle Stick before I order one?
A: Demo policy is informal — there's currently one used 6'2" on the floor at the San Clemente shop priced to clear at $250 (was $835). If you're local, come ride that board (or any other Popsicle Stick that surfaces in inventory) before you commit to a custom build. For non-local customers, the closest substitute is a conversation: message me with your home break, your current go-to board, and a session or two of recent footage if you have it, and I'll talk you through whether the Popsicle Stick is the right call before you put down a deposit. `[BLAKE: ?]` confirm the informal-demo framing rather than locking in a written demo policy.
