Scorpio

Our performance shortboard + step-up — for clean chest-to-overhead surf with push.

SHORTBOARDQUAD / 5-FINCHEST-HIGH TO DOUBLE-OVERHEADFROM $750

The Scorpio is our performance shortboard with step-up DNA — built for clean chest-to-overhead surf with real push.

WHAT IT WANTS

Clean chest-to-overhead surf with real push — Lowers on a real day, Mentawais reefs, Rincon at size, mainland Mexico points. Scorpio asks for waves with push.

SKILL LEVEL

For intermediate-to-advanced surfers who want HPSB performance committed to punchier surf. Not a forgiving shape on soft days.

WHAT IT'S NOT

Not a knee-high grovel shape. For softer surf, the Innuendo handles a broader wave range, or the Gumball paddles earlier.

BUILD DETAILS

Scorpio contour diagram — rocker profile, rail shapes, fin positions.

THE DESIGN

High entry rocker lets you drop clean on steep takeoffs without pearling; high exit rocker keeps the tail alive off the top. A single concave runs the full bottom — the classic HPSB drive surface that loads the lead foot and generates speed through the middle of a wave. 60/40 rails through the midsection transition to hard rails through the last 12" of the tail. The hard-tail edge is what distinguishes the Scorpio from a pure grovel HPSB — it releases water cleanly at speed and holds a line through critical sections.

THE RAILS

60/40 rails through the midsection for forgiving rail-to-rail; hard rails through the tail release cleanly at speed and keep the board committed through critical turns.

BRO vs PRO

Scorpio ships with two stock-dim tables — PRO dims (lighter-rider / HPSB-biased) and BRO dims (heavier-rider / small-wave-biased, +0.5–1L per length). Same outline, same rocker, same bottom. If you ride heavier or want more paddle, message Blake about the BRO dim set.

Volumes are starting points, not rulebooks. Conditions, stance, and style all shift the math.

STOCK DIMENSIONS

Stock dimensions are where we start. Scorpio ships with two tables (PRO and BRO) — the spec below shows PRO dims by default. Talk to Blake about the BRO dim set or any per-dim adjustments; he'll help you dial in a board with your riding preferences in mind.

Featured sizes cover the core-liters range (26–35L) most of our customers land in. Need a size outside the band? Expand All sizes or start a custom order for a specific dim.

+ How to think about dims

Length. Scorpio favors the 5'10"–6'4" range for clean chest-to-overhead surf. Longer = more rail and paddle for step-up situations (Mentawais, Rincon at size); shorter = quicker rail-to-rail in the pocket.

Width. The hard-tail rails benefit from a slightly narrower outline through the tail — narrower holds in punchy surf, wider adds paddle for softer days.

Thickness / volume. PRO dims run tighter (sensitive underfoot, committed rail bury); BRO dims add 0.5–1L for more paddle margin.

Between sizes? Size up for the step-up use case; size down for pure performance.

FIN SETUP

Quad stock. Futures boxes. The quad gives drive under the front foot and a looser, more skating tail release than a thruster — a step-up favorite when you want speed through the middle of a wave and freedom off the top. Add the 5-fin option at order time and you can run thrusters too on the same board (5 boxes total = 4 quad + 1 center thruster).

Need help picking between quad and thruster templates, or per-brand fin recommendations? Read the fin guide, then start a conversation — Blake's happy to talk through what's going to match your riding before you lock the build.

Recommended Fins

Scorpio is aggressive and demands commitment. It wants stiffer, higher-performance fins with more rake for hold through critical sections. This is not the board for flexy small-wave fins — Scorpio rewards power and precision.

RAKE SPECTRUM

Where each recommended fin sits between drawn-out rake (heavier arcs, more hold) and tight pivot (vertical release, modern shortboard turning). Mid-rake (neutral) is the balanced default.

On a high-performance shortboard, the spectrum reads: rake = drive priority through long-line carves; pivot = release off the top in steep pockets. Mid-rake (neutral) covers most everyday HPSB conditions.

WHAT TO PICK

Mid-rake (neutral) is the safest first pick on a high-performance shortboard — drive plus pivot release covers most clean shoulder-to-overhead conditions. Lean toward rake for heavier, drawn-out turns when the surf has push and shape; lean toward pivot for tight, top-to-bottom shortboard surfing in punchy beach break. Per-fin picks for this model are coming — message Blake for current recommendations across FCS, Futures, True Ames, and NVS.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the Scorpio a shortboard or a step-up?

Both. The Scorpio is primarily a performance shortboard, but the high entry rocker + single concave + hard-tail-rail combination holds in punchier surf than most pure shortboards. Riders who want a one-board option for chest-to-overhead clean surf land on the Scorpio. We cross-list it as a step-up so it shows up when you're filtering for either.

What's the difference between BRO and PRO dims?

Two versions of the same shape. PRO dims (the default on the spec table) are lighter-rider / HPSB-biased — thinner rails, less volume, tuned for quick turn response. BRO dims add +0.5 to +1L per length — heavier-rider / small-wave-biased, more paddle, more margin. Same outline, same rocker, same bottom. Message Blake if you want the BRO dim set.

What fin setup does the Scorpio ride?

Thruster stock (Futures boxes). Quad and 5-fin optional at order. Most riders stay thruster.

What waves is the Scorpio built for?

Clean, chest-to-overhead surf with push — Lowers on a real day, Rincon at size, reef breaks with shape. Not a knee-high grovel shape. If you want something for small soft surf, look at the Innuendo or Gumball.

How does the Scorpio compare to the Innuendo?

Innuendo is our baseline HPSB — slightly lower rocker, wider volume range, suits a broader wave window. Scorpio adds higher entry rocker + hard-tail-rail edge — more committed to punchy surf, less forgiving on softer days.

What size Scorpio should I order?

Same volume logic as any HPSB — pick the size that matches your weight + wave window. PRO dims at 26–30L suit intermediate competitive surfers around 150 lbs; 30–35L suits 160–180 lbs; BRO dims shift each up 0.5–1L.

How long does a Scorpio take to build?

4–6 weeks clear-sanded, 6–8 weeks gloss-and-polish, 8–10 weeks tint-sanded. 25% deposit locks your slot.

Can I see one before ordering?

Sometimes we have a Scorpio in clearance inventory at the shop — check `/shop/in-stock`. Custom orders are the primary path.
