The Bang! is built for the days the forecast calls fun-sized but not great — small-to-medium everyday surf where a contest shortboard bogs and a longboard is overkill. Designed to make the most of mediocre surf, with enough drive to step it up when the day surprises you.

WHAT IT WANTS

Knee-high to head-high — the small-to-medium everyday window that contest shortboards bog in. Soft summer mush, ankle-to-waist beach breaks, the inside reform when the outer peak shuts down. Steps up cleanly to chest-high Salt Creek or head-high Lowers when the south wraps in.

SKILL LEVEL

For intermediate-to-advanced surfers — grovel boards still reward technique. The wide planing outline does the paddle work, but you still need to read the wave and find your rail.

WHAT IT'S NOT

Not a step-up for double-overhead reef. Not a hollow-section specialist. When the wave gets heavy, the Innuendo or a step-up handles it; when you want trim-and-cross-step, a longboard is the tool.

HOW IT'S DESIGNED

Lowered entry rocker pulls the nose flat enough to paddle into soft, lazy walls before they break, while a wide planing outline carries volume forward through the chest so the lead foot has something to load against. A single concave under the front foot runs into a slight double through the fins — the front-foot gas pedal that turns paddle speed into glide, with clean release behind the fin cluster so the tail still drives off the back foot when the section actually stands up. 60/40 rails through the mid-section forgive mistimed weight transfers in mush; the hard tail rail keeps a vertical hit on the table when the wave gives you one.

WHERE IT WORKS

Built for the everyday SoCal window when the swell’s underwhelming — knee-high San Onofre summer slop, ankle-to-waist Doheny on a Tuesday, the inside reform at T-Street when the outer peak shuts down. Step it up to chest-high Salt Creek or head-high Lowers when the south finally wraps and the same board still has the drive to set a real rail. Travel-friendly for mainland Mexico’s soft point days and the off-peak summer trip where you’d rather pack one board than three.

STOCK DIMENSIONS

Bang! ships in a curated featured set inside the 28–37 liter band — paddle-into-power volume for grovel, calibrated so a typical 160–190 lb intermediate-to-advanced surfer floats high through soft sections without ending up on a plank that won’t turn. Sizes outside the band remain available behind the “All sizes” toggle so a lighter or heavier rider isn’t stranded. Public spec table shows length, width, thickness, and volume in two-decimal format with a Decimal ⇄ Fraction toggle (defaulting to decimal, snapping to the nearest 1/16" in fraction mode).

+ How to think about dims

Length. Longer = more paddle and earlier wave entry (the whole grovel point), more rail line through soft sections. Shorter = quicker rail-to-rail when the wave actually stands up, but harder to keep in soft mush. On a grovel shape, lean longer than your daily HPSB.

Width. Wider = the design intent. The Bang!'s wide planing outline is what carries you through the dead spots between sections — don't narrow it down toward an HPSB silhouette unless you're surfing it almost exclusively in fun-and-clean conditions.

Thickness / volume. Volume above what you ride on a daily HPSB is the default move on a grovel — the +2–4L over your usual gives you the float to plane through mush without losing rail engagement when the wave lets you turn.

Between sizes? Size up in volume (not length) for softer days; stay nearer the band floor when you're surfing this in clean fun surf where the push is doing the speed work.

FIN SETUP

Quad stock. Futures boxes. The quad is the right lead config for a grovel — drive under the front foot when the wave is soft, looser tail release than a thruster so you can break the fins free in waist-high mush, and the planing area between the four fins keeps the board moving through dead spots that would stall a thruster setup. Add the 5-fin option at order time and you can run thrusters too on the same board (5 boxes total = 4 quad + 1 center thruster) for the days the wave actually picks up.

A modern shortboard wants fins that balance drive and release. Mid-rake (neutral) is the everyday default — runs across most clean shoulder-to-overhead conditions. Lean rake for heavier drawn-out turns; lean pivot for tight, top-to-bottom shortboard surfing.

RAKE SPECTRUM

Where each recommended fin sits between drawn-out rake (heavier arcs, more hold) and tight pivot (vertical release, modern shortboard turning). Mid-rake (neutral) is the balanced default.

On a high-performance shortboard, the spectrum reads: rake = drive priority through long-line carves; pivot = release off the top in steep pockets. Mid-rake (neutral) covers most everyday HPSB conditions.

What size Bang! should I get for a 175-lb intermediate riding head-high reef?

A 5'10" × 20" × 2.42" sits at 31.1 L on the spec table — that's the center of the band most riders in your weight class land on for this model. If you're paddling into solid Lowers and want a touch more late-takeoff confidence, the 5'11" at 32.4 L is the sensible step up. If you're a strong paddler riding mostly clean reef where the push is doing the speed work, the 5'9" at 29.7 L will feel crisper underfoot. Talk to me before you order — height, stance, and the specific waves you ride matter more than the weight number alone.

Why a thruster as the default fin setup, not a quad?

The thruster gives you the vertical hit off the back foot that matches what this board wants to do — release water cleanly off the hard tail rail and project off the bottom turn. A quad loosens the tail and trades some of that vertical release for faster down-the-line drive, which is the right call when the wave is walling rather than standing up. We default to thruster because that's where the contour pivots best; if you know you want quad-feel or you want to switch between sessions, order the 5-fin convertible and run both.

What waves is the Bang! actually built for?

Solid SoCal swell — head-high to overhead-and-a-half — at spots where the wave has push behind the section. Lowers when the south wraps in clean. Overhead reef at Blacks. The punchier outside bowls at Salt Creek before the wind goes onshore. For travel, this is the board you pack for solid mainland Mexico (Pascuales when it's breaking right), the punchier swells in the Mentawais, or any North Shore session that doesn't need a true gun. It is not a board for knee-to-chest summer surf. If your typical session is shoulder-high or below, a daily-driver shortboard or a groveler covers that hierarchy better.

I'm a comfortable intermediate but I haven't ridden much overhead surf. Will the Bang! work for me?

Yes — if you're committed to using the board for the days the surf actually has push, not as your daily driver. The Bang! rewards commitment: late drops, driving bottom turns, projecting off the back foot. It gives back nothing on a knee-high day. If you want one board that covers everything from soft summer surf to the occasional overhead reef session, this isn't that board — get a daily-driver shortboard for the small-day default and add a Bang! for the days the buoy fills in. The model is tuned for the wave you want to surf, not the average wave you do surf.

How long does it take to get a Bang! built, and what's the process?

Each Bang! is built to order in Carlsbad. The process: I design the file in Shape3D against your specs — height, weight, surf level, the waves you actually ride. The foam is CNC-roughed from that file, then Jack Sykes finishes the board — final sanding, lamination, and finish work. Timeline runs 4–6 weeks for a clear-resin sanded build, 6–8 weeks for tint with gloss + polish, and 8–10 weeks for tint sanded (the longest because the lam color decision pushes back in the queue). 25% deposit at order, balance due on completion.

How does the Bang! compare to a CI Two Happy or a Pyzel Phantom XL?

The Two Happy and the Phantom XL sit in the same heavier-water HPSB neighborhood — modern HPSB rocker, a single→double-leaning hull, and copy framing built around "the board you want when the surf has push." All three boards target a rider who wants a performance shortboard for solid surf rather than a daily driver or a groveler. Where the Bang! lives is in that exact intersection — a punchy shortboard tuned for committed surfers in head-high to overhead-plus SoCal swell. If you've ridden either of those boards and liked them, the Bang! is a peer; if you want help picking between specific dims, start the conversation and I'll help dial it in.

What glassing options are available, and does the Bang! warrant a heavier deck schedule?

Default deck is 4oz S-cloth + 4oz warp (4S+4W); default bottom is 4oz S-cloth (4S). For solid-surf duty — repeated late-takeoff impact loading, harder deck pressure under the front foot — a heavier deck schedule (6S+4S) holds up longer. We can spec the heavier deck at order; it bumps the build a touch on weight and a touch on turnaround. Resin is polyester. Foam is standard PU or EPS per preference; the Carlsbad shop runs both. The contour diagram says "single concave" — is there really no double through the fins?

The contour diagram on this page reflects the file as it sits today — a single concave running through the visible length of the hull, with hard rails through the last twelve inches doing the release-water work that a double concave would otherwise do behind the fins. If you've ridden a single→double board and want me to spec the moderate double through the fins on your build, that's a straightforward Shape3D adjustment at order. The default — single concave + hard tail rails — is what the stock dims map to. Either way, the customer-facing answer for what your specific board has is locked at order, not at the diagram.
