The Gumball is a small-wave shortboard, built for the days that make up most of a SoCal year — waist-to-chest beach break, soft summer south swells, the inside reform at Salt Creek, San Onofre on a shoulder-high day, T-Street when it backs off mid-morning. It is not a fish, not a mid, not a longboard substitute. It is a shortboard, proportioned and contoured to keep the snap-and-release feel of a performance shortboard alive when the wave doesn't quite have the push to drive a high-rocker board off the bottom.
WHAT IT WANTS
Waist-to-overhead beach break, point, or reef with shape and push. Summer slop at San Onofre, sunrise sets at Salt Creek, clean Lowers when the south fills in. Travels well to Indo, Mexico, and Hawaii.
SKILL LEVEL
Intermediate to advanced surfers ready to feel an asymmetric outline. The geometry rewards thinking about toe-side and heel-side turns separately.
WHAT IT'S NOT
Not a flat-day groveler — for knee-high mush, a wider, flatter shape will plane better. Not a step-up either; when the surf gets to double-overhead with heavy push, a dedicated step-up will handle it.
BUILD DETAILS
Build overview — rocker profile, rail shapes, fin positions. Hover any zone for the per-section call-outs.

HOW IT'S DESIGNED
The outline carries width through the chest and a fuller nose than a high-performance shortboard, which buys you paddle and planing area without dragging the wide point forward of where it belongs. Medium entry rocker lets you paddle into early sections without bogging; medium exit rocker keeps the tail alive off the top instead of stalling after the first turn. The bottom runs single concave through the front two-thirds into a slight double through the back third behind the fins; the single gives the lead foot a clean, loaded surface, and the double splits water behind the fin cluster for drive out of turns. Rails sit 60/40 through the midsection and pull to a hard edge through the last 12" of tail, so the board engages quickly rail-to-rail and releases at speed when you ask it to.
WHERE IT WORKS
Built to your specs in San Diego — CNC-cut from your chosen foam blank, finished by Jack Sykes, glassed and sanded in-shop. Take it to a Mainland Mexico point on a small-trip day, a Saladita right-hander when the swell drops, or a summer south at Bowls on Town. The Gumball does what a shortboard does, in the conditions where most shortboards stop working.
THE DESIGN
A modern shortboard built for speed, response, and pressure on the rail. Specific rocker, concave, and outline tuning happen during the custom build conversation — built around your weight, your home break, and the conditions you ride most.
THE RAILS
Performance rails — soft through the front foot for forgiveness, tucked under the back foot for clean release. Rail thickness flexes by length and rider intent.
Custom builds are tuned to your dims and surfing style. Talk to Blake about specifics.
FIN SETUP
Asymmetric tri fin — the Gumball's signature config. Toe side (longer rail line) runs as a twin fin: two fins. Heel side (shorter rail line) runs as a thruster front + quad rear: two fins. Total: 4 fins, asymmetric. The geometry rewards drive off the front foot, looser-pivot heel-side turns. Standard twin-fin-only configuration also available.
Want to talk through the asymmetric geometry? Read the fin guide, then start a conversation — Blake's happy to walk you through how the rail-line difference plays out in practice.
Recommended Fins
The Gumball is a fun, forgiving shortboard built for smaller waves. It wants fins with less area and more flex — something that generates speed in weak surf without overpowering the board's playful character.

Performer
Small· Neo GlassAll-Around
Lighter construction with more flex. The small size keeps the Gumball's tail free and loose — important for a board designed around fun.
Shop FCS II →
Filipe Toledo
Small· PCSpeed / Small Wave
Filipe's template is optimized for generating speed in weaker waves. Upright with moderate area — keeps the Gumball lively.
Shop FCS II →
Carver
Medium· Performance CoreDrive / Rake-Leaning
More rake + larger area than the Performer. Holds drawn-out lines through head-high+ surf and rewards committed rail-to-rail carves. Reach for the Carver when the Performer feels too loose.
Shop FCS II →
Reactor
Medium· Performance CorePivot / Top-to-Bottom
Upright template with shorter base — releases off the top vertically. The pick when you want tight, snappy shortboard surfing in punchy beach break.
Shop FCS II →
AM2
Small· TechflexAll-Around
Downsized AM2 keeps the Gumball loose and skatey in small waves. The Techflex construction adds flex for generating speed through pumping.
Shop Futures →
F4
Small· ThermotechAll-Around / Small Wave
Low-profile, low-drag fin that won't overpower the Gumball in waist-high surf. Thermotech flex keeps things lively and responsive.
Shop Futures →
F8 Legacy Series
· HoneycombDrive / Rake-Leaning
Larger area + more rake than the F6. Sustained drive through long-line carves; the right Futures pick when you want hold over loose-tail release.
Shop Futures →
P6 Alpha
· AlphaPivot / Top-to-Bottom
Futures's P-series is their dedicated pivot template — upright leading edge, shorter base, vertical release. Pairs with shortboards built for punchy contest-style surfing.

Channel Islands Tri Medium
Medium· HexcoreAll-Around / Mid-Rake
True Ames's CI-collab thruster — hand-foiled fiberglass hexcore tuned for the modern shortboard. Balanced rake plus clean foil response on Futures-compatible boxes.

Channel Islands Tri Large
Large· HexcoreDrive / Rake-Leaning
Same CI-collab template scaled up. Larger area + more drive — the True Ames pick for shoulder-to-overhead surf where the Medium feels overwhelmed.

C-Drive Thruster Medium
Medium· ApexDrive / Rake-Leaning
NVS C-Drive cluster — drive-focused fiberglass hand-foil. Holds clean lines through committed turns; the NVS pick when JL feels too neutral and you want more drive off the bottom.

On a high-performance shortboard, the spectrum reads: rake = drive priority through long-line carves; pivot = release off the top in steep pockets. Mid-rake (neutral) covers most everyday HPSB conditions.
WHAT TO PICK
Mid-rake (neutral) is the safest first pick on a high-performance shortboard — drive plus pivot release covers most clean shoulder-to-overhead conditions. Lean toward rake for heavier, drawn-out turns when the surf has push and shape; lean toward pivot for tight, top-to-bottom shortboard surfing in punchy beach break. Per-fin picks for this model are coming — message Blake for current recommendations across FCS, Futures, True Ames, and NVS.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What size Gumball should I order for my weight and home break?
Most intermediate-to-advanced surfers in the 165–185 lb range land between 5'9" and 6'2" — that's the 30–40L volume band the featured catalog highlights. Lighter or taller riders can size outside the band via the All Sizes toggle. Sizing rule of thumb: stay in the same volume as your usual shortboard but accept the wider outline. Message us with your stats and home break if you want a specific call.
Why is the bottom contour asymmetrical on the diagram?
Both currently-listed Gumballs in stock are asymmetrical builds — single concave on one side, double on the other, with a sharper release on the heel-side rail. It's a $40 upcharge that biases the board toward the rail your back foot lives on (regular- or goofy-foot-specific). The symmetrical default runs single-to-double through the centerline; both options are available at build time.
Will the Gumball work on a head-high day at Lowers?
Yes, comfortably — the Gumball's wave range tops out at head-high with shape. It's not a step-up; if Lowers is over your head and hollow, a higher-rocker performance shortboard handles it better. But on a chest-to-head clean day at Lowers, the Gumball's medium rocker and hard-down tail rails still let you set a rail and snap clean off the top. It's a wide range for one board.
Is the Gumball a beginner board?
No. It's built for intermediate-to-advanced riders who already ride a shortboard on good days and want the same feel on a soft day. Beginners are better served by a wider, flatter, higher-volume shape that paddles fast and forgives bad timing. Get a foamie or a beater-grade longboard for the first year, then come back to a custom Gumball when you're ready.
How does the Gumball compare to a CI Average Joe?
Same category — small-wave shortboard built so a high-performance shortboard rider can keep the shortboard feel alive on a soft day. The Gumball runs a similar wider outline + fuller foil + modern single-to-double bottom contour. Differences are voice and tuning — the Gumball ships with hard-down tail rails by default and offers an asymmetrical option that the Average Joe doesn't. Built in San Diego; the CI is built in Carpinteria.
What fins does the Gumball ship with?
Stock setup is a thruster on Futures plugs — that's the published default per `models.ts`. Quad and 5-fin configurations are available at build (5-fin gives you both setups in the same board to swap day-to-day). Specific template recommendations are still finalizing across Futures, FCS II, True Ames, and NVS — message us with your weight and stance and we'll recommend a starting point.
What does a custom Gumball cost?
From $750 for a clear, sanded build (Starter tier) — that's the $750-tier `twin-fin-shortboard-stepup` price for a stock-spec Gumball. $900 with a resin tint both sides, sanded. $1,100 with resin tint plus gloss + polish. Add-ons (asymmetrical $40, deck patch ~$30, second tint color +$75, swallow tail $15) priced separately on top of the tier.
Can I try a Gumball before ordering one?
Sometimes. We currently have two used / clearance Gumballs in stock in San Diego — both asymmetrical builds, priced to sell. Message us to confirm what's available and book a time to come hold one, check the rails, and see the finish. Stock rotates as boards sell.
