The Hiatus is a forgiving mid-length built for the surfer who already lives on a shortboard but wants a real break — easier paddle, more glide, more wave count, without giving up the ability to turn off the bottom and find a rail.
WHAT IT WANTS
Waist-high to head-high surf with shape — soft beach-break shoulders, mellow points, reefs without much push. The Hiatus wants a wave with face you can draw a line on, not just a peak to drop into.
SKILL LEVEL
For intermediate-to-advanced surfers who already know how to read a wave. Shortboarders sizing up for paddle and wave-count without giving up real turns; longboarders sizing down when they want to find the rail.
WHAT IT'S NOT
Not a knee-high grovel shape, not a hollow-reef step-up, not a pure traditional log. If you want trim-and-cross-step rides, a longboard will serve better; if you want late drops on heavy reef, the Innuendo or a step-up handles it cleaner.

Message BlakeHOW IT'S DESIGNED
A forgiving entry rocker matched to a fuller mid-section under the chest does the work — you stay over the wave instead of stroking into it. The outline is full enough to plane through soft sections without losing momentum, and the rail line is long enough to draw out turns instead of pivoting in place. This isn't a board pretending to be a shortboard; it's a mid-length that respects the customer who knows what a turn feels like.
HOW IT RIDES
A 2+1 fin layout (single center fin plus two side bites) is the stock setup, and it gives you stability and drive when you load the rail. Pull the side bites and ride the center fin alone for the days you want classic mid-length trim — same board, two distinct feels.
THE DESIGN
A mid-length silhouette built for glide and trim from a 2+1 or single-fin platform. Wide point typically forward for paddle, with a longer drawn-out outline that holds line through long walls.
THE RAILS
Soft 50/50 rails through the midsection for trim hold. Rails pull harder through the tail to keep the board responsive when you stand and drive off the back foot.
Custom builds are tuned to your dims and surfing style. Talk to Blake about specifics.
FIN SETUP
Hiatus ships with a 2+1 fin layout — one center single-fin box plus two Futures side bites. Stock is the full 2+1 (run all three), which gives stability and drive when you load the rail. Pull the side bites and ride the center fin alone for the days you want classic mid-length trim — same board, two distinct feels, one config out of the box.
Need help picking a center-fin template, or sorting through side-bite options? Read the fin guide, then start a conversation — Blake's happy to talk through what's going to match your riding before you lock the build.
Recommended Fins
Mid-lengths default to rake-leaning to mid-rake — design tuned for trim speed and clean drawn-out turns. 2+1 (large center single + 2 side bites) is preferred when the box layout supports it; pure single-fin templates are the fallback. NO thrusters or quads on a mid-length. V4 Part B: 2 picks per brand spanning mid-rake (everyday) and rake-leaning (drive-focused).

Where each recommended fin sits between drawn-out rake (heavier arcs, more hold) and tight pivot (vertical release, modern shortboard turning). Mid-rake (neutral) is the balanced default.
Drawn-out arcs. Power, hold, drive through long-line turns.
Balanced — drive plus pivot release. The everyday HPSB default.
Tight, vertical release. Modern shortboard pivot off the top.

NVSC-Drive Apexmid-rake (neutral)
On a mid-length, the spectrum reads: rake = drive and hold through the trim phase; mid-rake = a more pivoty mid-length feel. Pivot-leaning fins are typically used on smaller-side bites in 2+1 setups.
WHAT TO PICK
Mid-lengths default to rake-leaning to mid-rake — the design is built for trim speed and clean drawn-out turns. Lean rake for traditional 2+1 setups and longer trim lines; lean mid-rake when the model wants a touch more pivot off the top. Per-fin picks for this model are coming — message Blake for current recommendations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What size Hiatus should I order for my weight?
Pick volume first, then trim length to your height. As a rule of thumb, if your shortboard is around 28L, your Hiatus will likely sit in the 40–45L range — that's roughly the 7'2"–7'4" featured set. Add length if your reference waves are weaker (mushy beach breaks, summer points) or you're recovering from a layoff. Subtract length if you're surfing punchier reefs and want the board to feel more shortboard-adjacent.
Can I run the Hiatus as a thruster?
Stock setup is 2+1: a single center fin (10" Futures box) plus two side bites. The factory configurations are 2+1 (all three) or single-fin (center alone, side plugs covered) — same board, two distinct feels. Thruster isn't a stock option because the center box is sized for a 10" mid-length single, not a thruster center. Tell us which feel you want when you place the order.
What waves does the Hiatus actually want?
Soft mornings at San Onofre when the period stretches long. Small windows at Salt Creek when the swell drops below knee-high. T-Street on a forgiving day. Mainland Mexico points like Saladita where the wave wants line, not a hop-and-bounce. The Hiatus comes alive when the wave's there but the energy's softer than your shortboard wants. It's not built for hollow reef or knee-high mush.
Is the Hiatus a beginner board?
No. It's built for intermediate-to-advanced surfers — you should already know how to read a wave and find your line. The board respects the customer who knows what a turn feels like; it's not a learning platform. Beginners are better served by a wider, flatter, higher-volume soft-top or a foam-forward longboard while you're building paddle strength and wave-reading instincts.
How long until my Hiatus is ready?
Turnaround depends on the finish:
- Clear resin sanded — 4–6 weeks
- Tint gloss + polish — 6–8 weeks
- Resin tint sanded — 8–10 weeks
Timeline reflects the current queue and is confirmed at order. A 25% deposit locks the build slot. Built to your specs in San Clemente — designed in Shape3D, CNC-cut, and finished by the team.
How does the Hiatus compare to a Pyzel Mid Length Crisis?
Both are performance mid-lengths aimed at the shortboarder bridging up. The Crisis is a known reference in that customer brief — modern outline, 2+1 capable, paddle-and-turn balance. The Hiatus is the Lundquist take on the same brief: forgiving entry rocker, fuller mid-section under the chest, 2+1 + single-fin alt. Built to your specs in San Clemente rather than off-the-rack — so your Hiatus is tuned to your weight, height, and home break, not the average customer.
What glassing options are there on the Hiatus?
Stock glassing is 6oz S-cloth + 4oz warp on the deck and 4oz S-cloth + 4oz warp on the bottom — a notch heavier than shortboard spec to support mid-length flex on longer rails. A Volan deck patch is +$30 (common request — concentrates flex under the front foot). Volan tail patch is +$40 (recommended for heavier riders or cross-step-curious customers). EPS / heavier customs by quote.
Can I try a Hiatus before ordering one?
Sometimes. We keep a small number of display boards in the shop in San Clemente so you can hold one, check the rails, see the finish. Message us to confirm what's currently available — stock rotates as boards sell. The Hiatus is a custom-built model, so most orders are made-to-spec rather than off-the-rack — but seeing one in person before you order helps lock the right size.
